How to develop your own art style.

Finding our own art style is probably one of the things where artists struggle the most. But it shouldn’t be.  Look, I’m sorry if you are reading this in hopes of me telling you a step-by-step guide to finding your own style because this is not how art style works. Plus, you already have an art style. Because the way you draw is your art style.  However, I will give you some tips and tricks to help you grow as an artist.

I, myself still struggle with art style to this day, and most artists do too. We want to have our own style, so that it is easily recognized, but we have to like it too, and then we look at someone else’s drawing and think “I wish I had this art style” and get frustrated because we can’t see anything special about ours and try to change it a little bit, but then we realize our style is changing and “oh no, I can’t have an art style because it’s always changing!” Well, here we go, I’m just gonna say it: Art style can change, in fact, it is always changing and evolving.

If you look at old drawings of this artist that you really like I guarantee you their style has changed. Below you can see how my art changed in almost two years. Old ones are on the left and new ones are on the right.

What I want to say is that we shouldn’t stress about our art style for the sake of finding an art style, it comes on its own. Now, something I recommend doing to help is:

Try different things, techniques, line-art... Then keep what you like and change whatever you want to change. Eventually, your art style will consolidate. However, don’t expect it to stay that way forever because again, you are evolving and you should draw whatever and however you want without the pressure of having a strict art style to stick to.

Using this technique I just told you about, you will change your art style while keeping your essence too. However, if you want to radically change your art or always draw something in a different style, why not? That can be your art style too! The “no art style” art style. You should do whatever feels good with your art, that’s why it’s YOUR art.

I hope this helped you even if it’s just a little bit, I know it can be frustrating! If you liked this post, feel free to share it with whoever you think should see it! Also, you can follow me on Instagram to be a part of my art journey!
